Information for Schools

This section provides some key information and resources for schools who are administering the survey.

SALSUS questions will be combined with the Realigning Children’s Services (RCS) survey within some schools in South Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway and Moray between January and the start of April 2019. For more information, please go to transformingchildrensfutures.scot

Parental consent

Ensuring that parents are aware of the research is very important. We would therefore be extremely grateful if you could raise awareness that the school is taking part in the survey. This could be done, for example, by posting a short message on the school website, in e-newsletters, or via other sources from which parents receive information from the school.

If you have systems in place that would allow you to do this, please direct communications only to parents of children who will be participating in the survey. If this was the case we would recommend using a variation of the following:

Your child’s class has been invited to take part in an important research study being undertaken at [school name]. The survey is called SALSUS and is run by Ipsos MORI on behalf of the Scottish Government. Pupils who take part in this survey will be asked to complete a questionnaire during a PSE class. The questions cover health and lifestyle, including attitudes towards smoking, drinking and drug use among young people. The survey has been running since 1982 and the results have helped in the planning and development of services for young people in Scotland aimed at reducing smoking, drinking and drug use. Completed questionnaires will be kept in the strictest confidence and stored securely. Pupils will be asked not to put their name on the questionnaires and they cannot be identified in the results. Your child will be given a consent form to take home, which will provide you with more information about the survey and what to do if you do not wish your child to take part.

If it’s not possible to direct the communications just to parents of children in selected classes you could use a more general notice such as:

[School name] has agreed to take part in SALSUS 2018, a Scottish Government survey run by Ipsos MORI. Only some classes in S2 and S4 will be asked to complete the survey. If your child’s class has been invited to participate, they will be given a consent form to take home, which will provide you with more information about the survey and what to do if you do not wish your child to take part.

Please remember to send out the parental consent form at least 7 days before administering the survey so that they have sufficient time to opt out of the survey if they wish to.

Replacement/missing materials

Schools will be sent packs of materials for each participating class, which will include instructions for administering the survey, parent consent forms, and information leaflets for pupils. Our preference would be for as many schools as possible to complete the survey online. Completing the survey online is better for the environment and is more cost effective for the Scottish Government. Furthermore, the quality of online data is better. However, we understand that this is not always possible for schools for varying reasons. You can therefore complete the survey on paper if easier.

If you are missing any survey materials e.g. a set of instructions or a class response sheet, they are available for download below for your convenience. We are happy to send out hard copy replacements if you prefer.

Paper survey materials

Online survey materials

If you need more paper questionnaires or access codes for the online survey, please contact Lucy and she will arrange to have more sent out to you.

Returning paper questionnaires

For enquiries about booking a courier to collect completed paper questionnaires from the school please contact Heather Dewhurst or Mike Payne at Design to Print on 01342 826 662.

While the majority of questionnaires will be returned by courier, we have provided reply paid envelopes in order to return those of individual absent pupils. If you misplace these envelopes, or have not been sent enough, you can download the freepost return address and stick it on the front of an A4 envelope.
